rings you can return but an iPod is forever!
this geek is officially off the market. In true geek fashion I proposed to my girlfriend via the iPod. A brand new black 4gb Nano with the marriage proposal engraved on the back. I was more worried that I would have to return the Nano than the ring. Also I was very nervous that the right message was there since I didn't open it ahead of time. That way it was even more of a shock since it had all the wrapping direct from the factory. It would have been a shame if there was a mix up and she got the one that read "congrats crazy Jim on the big 5-0". She was very surprised and said "yes" by the way, hey she was getting a new Nano AND a diamond ring, what more could a geek wife to be want?
Love is in the air and wonderful music and pictures are on the nano.

Interesting... I had this idea 2 years ago. I told my then boyfriend that I didn't want a ring, and that I wanted to be proposed to via an engraved shiny new iPod!

Is that the ring you gave? Dang, forget the IPOD! Cute idea though but you know how do you get out of getting down on your knee & being nervous & stumbling with the words coming out etc. I think that is what it is all about! :-)

I did the same thing with a iPod Mini back in April. When she removed the iPod from the box, the ring was underneath it. Oh, and she did say yes.
Congrats! And one other story to add to the list of geek proposals --
Six years ago I proposed to my now-wife by mocking up the NYTimes Web site, with headlines, articles, photos, and an audioclip of the proposal itself as a link off the lead headline. Even modified the hosts file so that "www.nytimes.com" requests would go there rather than to the 'real' site. It was a big hit.
